THE KZ PROJECT

This is the "company ride" for Motor Cop Shop. It is a 2002 Kawasaki KZ1000P. It served as equipment #535 for the Los Angeles Police Department for about 40,000 miles. When combined with the trailer I have enough room to bring along everything I need. It's virtually the same model of motorcycle I rode for 20 years as a motor officer with the San Diego Police Department. I purchased it from a dealer in California who buys auctioned vehicles for resale. It was mechanically sound, but needed a lot of cosmetic work.

In January 2011 I had it shipped to my home and began the restoration process. I decided to take it down to the frame, removing everything, including the motor and all wiring. The reassembly was done with care, cleaning every nut and bolt, chasing threads and replacing any questionable parts with OEM parts from Kawasaki.

I made some changes to enhance the safety, performance, and durability of the KZ.

• Stock windscreen replaced with shorter one made of smoke acrylic from Jurock Plastics
• Fairing wiring plug replaced with a sealed plug relocated under center support
• Front emergency lights replaced with a thru-the-fairing air induction system to the engine
• Rear turn signals replaced with LED's and additional LED brake lights added
• Trailer hitch fashioned from 2 rear center crash bars, followed by a trailer from Road Dog Trailers
• Stock exhaust replaced with a more efficient 4 into 2 system from M.A.C. Performance
• Garmin GPS system hardwired at the handlebars which pairs to a PVP bluetooth headset inside my Arai RXQ helmet
• 12v charging station inside the radio box
• Appearance enhanced by chrome & black pearl paint, highlighted by decal work from Auto Trim Design

I could not have accomplished this restoration without the assistance of these skilled contributors.

Mr. Dan Heck, retired Master Motorcycle Technician from San Diego PD

Mr. Henry Nottingham, the Parts Guru at San Diego House of Motorcycles

Mr. Pedro Encinas, my very talented painter who did all the work on his own time.
